Baxter Lochness Marathon

Have you ever been to the Baxters Lochness Marathon and Festival of Running, if not i would highly recommend it. Last weekend 16 of us from Phd Jogscotland went up and we had a great weekend. We had runners taking part in the 5km, 10km and the Marathon. I took part in the Marathon along with Andy Davidson, Willie Thomson, Mark Strachan, Stuart Robertson and Margaret Birnie. The Lochness Marathon starts at Fort Augustus and takes along the shores of Lochness into the Inverness City Centre, I never seen "oor monster" alias Stuart Robertson till about 4 miles from Inverness and he took of like a bullet when he saw me, fortunetly i was able sneak past him with 2 mile to go again!! I finished in a pb of 3 hrs 46 mins and 55 secs so was delighted, to see all the photographs simply click here

Well done Stuart and Jacqueline

Stuart Robertson and Jacqueline Henderson Peterhead Jogscotland members took part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday 4th September at Hazlehead Park and raised the fantastic sum of £1600. This year JDRF introduced the TAQA 10k run (which Stuart took part in) as well as the 7km walk, and 5km run which Jacqueline took part in. The whole event raised a staggering £100,000 with more funds rolling in every day. Stuarts son and daughter have been both being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and as a result Stuart a Jogleader at Peterhead Jogscotland took part in the event to raise money for this great charity and raise awareness of this condition that effects so much young people. Stuart said: “The Walk to Cure Diabetes was a fantastic success with so many people stepping out together to support the type 1 community, which means so much to my family. It’s great to know that any amount of money we manage to raise will help JDRF fund more vital research into finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that causes the body’s own immune system to turn on itself and attack cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. The condition affects about 350,000 adults in the UK, including over 26,000 children. It can cause devastating complications including blindness, heart disease, amputation, stroke and kidney failure and reduces life expectancy by 20 years. Ashley Adamson, Fundraiser for Scotland at JDRF added: “The efforts of all of our supporters continue to astound me. With so many people still being affected by type 1 diabetes it is crucial that we continue to be able to fund research into the condition, as this is the only way we can make progress in finding the cure for a condition that has such a dramatic effect on people’s lives.” .

The Big 50 (Miles) Challenge

Ever since i went to work at Technip at Westhill Aberdeen nearly 10 years ago i have had people saying to me when they know i stay in Peterhead "you drive that distance every day thats not real". Its always been an ambition of mine to say to just one person " Well actually i haven't only driven there, i've run it as well". So last Sunday along with Ros my wife, daughter Steph and 12 other friends at Peterhead Jogscotland we took on the challenge to do just that run all the way home!! We left Peterhead on Sunday morning at 7am by mini-bus and drove to Westhill arriving at 8am and we started the long run home at approximately 8.15 after getting our photograph taken by the Security Guard at Technip who must have thought we had lost the plot- and he probably wasn't far wrong1!!! ha ha. Our route took us from Westhill to Blackburn Roundabout at the A96, through the village of Blackburn and onto Hatton of Fintry, the back road to Newmachar past Newmachar Golf Course. At Newmachar we went onto the Formartine and Buchan Walkway, which eventually 6 hrs later would take us all the way to Peterhead via Udny, Ellon, Auchnagatt, Maud, Mintlaw and Longside!! When we left Westhill the weather was quite foggy but we didn't mind a bit as it kept us quite cool, and visibility was still quite good which was all important till we got onto the Fomartine/ Buchan Walkway as we were most of the time running on country roads. At about 10am the fog lifted and the day turned out really hot, and we were really gratefull to our back up team of Stewart Strachan, Andy Davidson and Marshall Birnie in the van (who took turns at running as well as driving) who kept us fed and watered along the route. If it hadn't been for their efforts i think the outcome could have been very different. Our main stopping place during the challenge was at Ellon (22 miles into the run) where we stopped for about 30 mins to take in food as well as the usual drinks (no alcohol i must add ha ha). When we stopped at Ellon Leah and her wonderful family were there to support us, and this in turn gave us a great boost!! The most challenging bit of the route we all agreed was the 7 miles from Ellon to Auchnagatt, on that part of the route there was very little access points for the mini-bus, as a result by the time we got to Auchnagatt we were all beginning to get a bit dehydrated/weary it was so warm, and we were really grateful to Andy who met us about 1km out and gave us some water to keep us going till we got to Auchnagatt!! At Auchnagatt as well as the 15 of us who started the challenge, we were joined by Margaret, Jennifer and Bonnie who run with us all the way to Peterhead which was 18 miles, which in itself was a great achievement. After Auchnagatt our next leg took us to Maud Station and although it wasnt in our plans it was great to stop over for about a 15 mins to regroup again, we were also joined by the Press and Journal photographer who took our photo. At Mintlaw we were met by Elaine Weir, Elaine Lemon, Marilyn, Katrina, Debra and Valerie which was just great and spured us on to the end, we were also joined by 4 younger joggers along the route Cameron, Shelly and Ewan and all did magic as well. We finally arrived at Catto Park Pavilion Peterhead at 6.15pm 10 hrs after we left Westhill. After 10 years at Technip i have finally completed my ambition to "RUN All THE WAY HAME TO PETERHEID WHAT A FANTASTIC FEELING IT WAS"!!! A week later i am still waiting for that sentence " You drive that distance every day" -you know what my reply will be!!!!! ha ha. It didnt start off as a sponsored event until i learned about and met Leah Ligertwood. Leah was born 2 years ago with Celebral Palsy and is off to the USA in August for a major operation which will hopefully give her full use of her legs. I only met Leah a few weeks ago at a wedding in which she was the flower girl, but from that moment i just knew i had to try and support the family as her operation is costing £40,000 which the family have to pay for themselves. With the generous donation of colleagues at work we are hoping to have raised about £1300 for the family. I know a lot of you have made donations to the appeal already and came along to support our Leahs Royal Wedding Fun Run last week, and we really appreciate your support which was just fantastic!! As i approach my Big 50th birthday (i know you dont believe it!!) I hope our Big 50 (Miles) Challenge will inspire YOU some of you to go that "extra mile" when getting more active through jogging. I never started jogging till i was nearly 40, i never dreamed I would complete a Half Marathon let alone a 50 mile run in one day, just shows you what you/we can achieve if you are willing to put in the effort. All the leaders at Peterhead Jogscotland are committed to help you each and everyone of you achieve your goal whatever that maybe a 3,5 or 10km or even a London or New York Marathon we promise we will help you to achieve that goal, as so many of our members have at Peterhead Jogscotland over the last few years!!. Remember if you have any questions or queries just ask, we cant help you if we dont know!!!! To see all photographs from THE BIG 50 (MILES) CHALLENGE simply click here

Pilates with Suzie

Many of our members have been coming to me and saying how much they have enjoyed, are feeling the benefits of the Pilates class we have organised with Suzie Crane in the Rescue Hall on a Friday night since October. As a result we going to trial for a period of a month (to gauge the response) Pilates on a Wednesday night from the 20th April at the Football Club after our normal jogging session. It will start at 7.30 to about 8.30pm, as a result we will be starting all our groups at 6.30pm prompt, so we can get some lite refreshments before the Pilates start. The session of a Friday night will stop over the summer months to give you an opportunity to go out with the club for a leisurely jog under the instructions of Marshall Birnie one of leaders. Meet and Greet Evening With Alistair Currie

We had a great time last week when Alistair Currie Jogscotland Manager spent the evening with us at Peterhead Jogscotland. We had about 155 members along plus 28 leaders so Peterhead Football Club was bursting to the seams!!After Alistair can back from jogging with the beginners he presented our Achiever Of The Year Awards to Sandra Davidson, and our under 16s Award to Shelly Duncan. Sandra only joined us last August as her enthusiasm for Jogscotland and jogging is really inspiring. Only a few weeks ago she turned for Sunday afternoon leisurely jog and ended up doing a 12k nae real when think she never jogged before August last year its just amazing!! Shelly Duncan was 14 year olds last Monday (Happy Birthday Shelly) and never misses a session even on a Thursday night when she is beating all the men on track. Over the last year Shelly has progressed so much she is one of best runners in our club. Remember that name in future as Shelly is going to be a real star!! Shelly and Sandra we are really proud of you at Peterhead Jogscotland what you have achieved over this last year is just brillant. Well done to all those who won a prize on the night from our free prize draw pity i wasnt one of them!! To see all photographs from the night simply click here

Maggie Cancer Centre Aberdeen

We are really thrilled to be supporting four of our Peterhead Jogscotland girls Sheila Murray, Dawn-anne Beattie, Angela Hastie and Liz McIntosh who will be taking part in the Inverness Half Marathon on Sunday 13th March in aid Maggie's Cancer Centre in Aberdeen. Sheila brother died 20 yrs ago on the 10th March and she is running the Half Marathon in memory of him, and Sheila friends and fellow Jogscotland members Dawn-anne, Angela and Liz have all lost someone close to them through cancer so they decided to train with her and do the half marathon to show support for this wonder charity, and to Sheila at the same time. Every Sunday for months now Sheila, Dawn-anne, Angela and Liz have been training for the Half Marathon, and we know there hard work will pay off. The main campaign to raise money for Maggie's is a partnership between Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, the Press and Journal and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation, which was set up in memory of Colin Montgomerie's mother, who died from lung cancer in 1991. Read more here Next Wednesday 9th March from approximately 7pm in the Peterhead Football Club upstairs we are having a special Coffee/Tea and Fine pieces in aid of Maggies Cancer Centre to show support to all our girls. Please come along (even if your not a member) and show support to them by making a donation for this great cause. Next Wednesday night Peterhead Jogscotland will also be making a donation of behalf of all our members to this great cause. Fraserburgh Jogscotland Boxing Day Beach Run

About 20 Peterhead Jogscotland members attended the Boxing Day Beach Fun Run which was organised by Fraserburgh Jogscotland, it was a brillant run and the weather was really nice for the time of year. Gillian Strachan and her team in Fraserburgh have done an amazing "job" since they started Fraserburgh Jogscotland in April last year and now have Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced groups with over 200 people attending regularly which is just amazing!! Fraserburgh Jogscotland raised £1000 for the Fishermen Mission with their efforts that day. Being a former fisherman myself, i appreciate all the work the Fishermens Mission does and its a great cause to support!! To see all the photographs of the Beach Run simply click here
